2015 was a pretty good year for gigs, here’s some quick stats:
• I photographed 149 bands, at 18 different venues in Melbourne and Sydney
• 100 of these were bands I had never shot before
• I attended 36 gigs, 27 of these I photographed
• I photographed 7 festivals (4 of these were music festivals)
• Tour of the year for me: Smashing Pumpkins
I think 2015 will always be remembered (for me anyway) as the year that Soundwave Festival ended. It was always the highlight of my year, and honestly I’m pretty upset that I don’t have it to look forward to in 2016. Most of my favourite shots from this year were taken at Soundwave, and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to shoot both the Melbourne & Sydney leg of the festival this year.
Here’s a 50 of my favourite shots or moments from 2015. I feel like we get so used to looking at tiny photos on Instagram that a ‘best of’ blog post is the digital version of an exhibition. Next step: perhaps have another exhibition in 2016?
It’s too hard to pick my top 5 favourite gigs for the year, so I’ll just name the stand out moment. It was Soundwave week, and as well as photographing the festival in Melbourne & Sydney I was also following Smashing Pumpkins on tour and was going to see them four times that week (they were one of the headliners of Soundwave). I had entered a competition on Facebook to win tickets to a private performance by Billy Corgan in Sydney, and I won!
In the afternoon before the show, ten of us were escorted in to the foyer of the Big Top at Luna Park where Billy and some empty seats were waiting for us. He spent half an hour answering all our questions and talking about the band and the music industry, and then he played three songs for us acoustic – Today, Perfect and Dorian. As we were leaving the performance and walking back through Luna Park, my friend and I spotted Billy sitting against one of the rides by himself, checking his phone. Everyone else had walked off, so we took the quick opportunity to ask for an autograph. He signed the cover of Mixdown Magazine that I had with me, with my photo of him on the cover from the 2012 Smashing Pumpkins tour.
I’ll never forget that afternoon.
