Smashing Pumpkins Australian Tour 2015

Last year I wrote about my previous experiences of following Smashing Pumpkins on tour, just before they toured Australia again for Soundwave Festival. Anyone who has photographed (or even just attended) Soundwave before knows how exhausting it is, and once it was all over I spent a good few weeks recovering from the craziness. Over the last few weeks my Facebook feed has been filled with Soundwave memories from photographers and fans, and it’s making me so appreciative for the incredible memories the festival gave me.

In late February 2015, I spent a week following Smashing Pumpkins on tour again and shooting their gigs: Soundwave Festival in Melbourne, Festival Hall in Melbourne, the Big Top in Sydney, and finishing up with Soundwave Festival in Sydney. And because Soundwave was spread over two days last year too, it meant that the last band I ever saw play my favourite festival was Smashing Pumpkins – not a bad way to end such an incredible week, and festival, overall.

Below are some of my favourite shots from their 2015 ‘Monuments To An Elegy’ tour. All images were shot on my Nikon D800, and you can view more over on my Flickr.

BIG TOP AT LUNA PARK, SYDNEY – FEBRUARY 25th, 2015

Leading up to the tour, there was a competition running on Facebook to attend a private acoustic performance by Billy Corgan before the concert that night in Sydney. All you had to do is name three songs you’d like to hear, who you would take with you, and be a ticket holder for the show that night. I was up late the night before flying to Sydney still trying to madly edit my Soundwave photos, when I got the notification at 1am that I had won!

It was a really special experience with only about 12 other winners. Billy was set up in the foyer of the venue by himself where he chatted and answered questions for about half an hour, and then performed Today, Perfect and Dorian for us.

After we left the performance and walked out, my friend spotted Billy leaning against one of the rides in Luna Park checking his phone. The other fans had already left so we went up and said hi, and I was able to get my Mixdown Magazine signed with my photo of him on the cover (which I talked about it this post). It’s now proudly framed in my lounge room.

The private performance was obviously going to be the highlight of the tour, but the show in Sydney that night was probably the best of the full live concerts I saw that week. The crowd was really into it and the band were smiling so much and feeding off the crowd’s energy.
