Thanks to Architects Of Entertainment, I had the opportunity to photograph my first Splendour In The Grass Festival in Byron Bay last July. After years of admiring everyone else’s photos on Facebook and Instagram of the picturesque festival and the ridiculous list of bands to see over three days, I finally made it.
Splendour reminded me of a blend of Harvest Festival (for the arts) and Falls Festival (for the laid-back attitude), with a dash of Laneway (for the fashion). Great bands, chilled out vibe, beautiful venue, great people – Splendour In The Grass really does have it all.
My favourite thing about shooting festivals is the opportunity to discover new artists, my top five new discoveries were:
1. Catfish & The Bottlemen – apparently everyone knows this band except me
2. Maggie Rogers – this was her first Australian show
3. LCD Soundsystem – I knew *of* them, but that’s it
4. Alice Ivy
5. Vera Blue
And my favourite performances for the weekend from bands I was already a fan of:
1. BANKS – love her
2. Queens Of The Stone Age
3. Royal Blood
4. Client Liason – with Tina Arena as a special guest
5. Future Islands – Samuel Herring’s dance moves are just the best
Here’s some of my favourite shots from Splendour In The Grass 2017. All images were shot on my Nikon D810 & D800, and you can view more over on my Flickr.
Part of shooting for Architects Of Entertainment for Splendour included photographing the set up for the festival, so we arrived two days earlier to get some before and after shots.
See you next year, Splendour.
